Who can play wheelchair rugby?

RISE recreational wheelchair rugby is open to people with any disability.

You do not need to prove that you are eligible for league competition before you try a RISE session. Beginners and experienced players can learn, practice, and play together.

Interested in league play?

Sanctioned leagues have separate eligibility and classification rules. Competitive wheelchair rugby was created for athletes whose disabilities affect both their arms and legs. RISE can help interested players understand the next steps for competition.

The game

Four players. One ball. A full court.

Teams carry the ball across the opposing goal line. Chair-to-chair contact is part of the sport, and players use blocks, picks, speed, and passing to create space.

01

Mixed teams

Men and women compete together. Classification values help teams combine athletes with different functional abilities.

02

Purpose-built chairs

Competition uses manual rugby chairs made for contact. RISE has loaner chairs, so a beginner does not need to own one.

Your first RISE session

Come curious. We will help with the rest.

Arrive early for check-in and chair fit. A coach will review contact safety, movement, ball handling, and the practice plan.

Bring water and active clothing. Complete the RSVP information and waiver before you play.

Family members, caregivers, therapists, students, and spectators are welcome to watch. Each person who takes part needs an RSVP.

Able-bodied players are welcome

RISE sometimes needs able-bodied players to make a full scrimmage. Open RSVP and select the participation option that fits your visit.
