It was not long ago that quad rugby in North Texas consisted of five casual members. Today more than 15 members play weekly in Irving at RISE’s recreational program. From that recreational program the North Texas Cowboys Division 3 team has formed. The team consists of members from the physical disability community who meet USQRA regulations. Each player on the team has to be “rated” by a USQRA sanctioned staff member in order to play in sanctioned games or tournaments. Most of the players on the North Texas Cowboys were introduced or re-introduced to the sport through the RISE recreation program. They made a promise to themselves to come out on Friday nights and just have fun. The RISE recreational program model proves what a difference this game can make in the lives of those who wake up and choose to participate rather then sit at home and think about participating. The RISE weekly program focuses on providing a recreation program for ALL members of the disability community to come out, with their friends and family, and play. Play for ten minutes or two hours. RISE provides all the equipment and staff necessary to run the recreational quad rugby program. All you need to do is show up. If you’re not sure you want to play you can show your support from the sidelines. No matter your current activity level, this program will excite you. It’s a program that you can grow in.
